Surveillance: The not-so-injured employee exposed

Bascombe International was instructed by a local corporation to investigate an employee who had been absent from work on extended sick leave. The employee had allegedly been in an accident which affected his ability to work long-term.

The employee was referred to Harley Street in London to meet with a medical consultant to discuss the severity of his injuries, but his employer had reason to believe that his injuries were not as impactful as he was claiming.

With their suspicions in mind, the employer appointed Bascombe International’s team of private investigators to follow the employee on the day of his scheduled appointment in London.

Two of Bascombe’s agents commenced surveillance from a vehicle outside of the employee’s residence on the morning of his appointment. They witnessed two men leaving the house; one of them was on crutches and another was assumingly his father.

The two men got into a taxi and were driven to the local train station, discreetly followed by Bascombe’s agents. Arriving at the station, the two men got out on foot and walked onto the platform, where the approaching train was departing for London.

The employee appeared to be struggling to walk, heavily relying on the crutches as his father assisted him to the Harley Street medical clinic.

When they arrived at the clinic, Bascombe’s agents waited outside, within a close-enough proximity to maintain discreet surveillance, so that they wouldn’t miss the employee and his father leaving the building.

Approximately 2 hours later, the two men left the Harley Street building, walked down the road and around a corner. Bascombe’s agents continued to follow the two men, when suddenly the employee took off his crutches and hastily threw them over a fence into someone’s back garden. The two men strolled off, with no difficulty or sign of an injury, into a pub.

Bascombe’s agents continued surveillance from outside the pub. 4 hours later, the two men left the pub, retrieved the crutches and went home.

It was apparent from the surveillance that the employee had nothing wrong with him.

Bascombe International submitted the footage to his employer, which resulted in a disciplinary meeting and facilitated a dismissal.
